Billy Bob Thornton Says He and Taylor Sheridan Hang Out ‘After Hours’ While Making “Landman”: ‘I Love His Company’ (Exclusive)

NEED TO KNOW

  • The actor reveals he was “literally crying” when he learned Sam Elliott would play his onscreen father

  • Thornton predicts season 3 may blend season 1’s tension with season 2’s family and business dynamics

Billy Bob Thorntonis having a very good time onLandman— and it shows.

The actor, whostars as Tommy Norrisin the hitTaylor Sheridanseries, tells PEOPLE that working on the show has been nothing short of a dream, thanks in large part to the tight-knit cast and crew and his close bond with its creator.

“I trust this show a lot,” Thornton says while attending a specialLandmanscreening and Q&A in Hollywood on Thursday, April 16. “I trust Taylor and I trust the castmates. I trust our crew. Honestly, I wish I had, like, a creepy story or a complaint, but I don’t. I mean, it’s just, it’s a lovely time.”

That sense of ease extends well beyond the set. “Yeah, oh, it’s great. I love working with Taylor,” Thornton says. “I love hanging out with him after hours. He’s such a brilliant guy, great writer, and I love his company.”

During the April 16 panel discussion, Thornton emphasized just how much he values the people behind the scenes, calling theLandmancrew the best he’s worked with in hisdecades-long career.

“I have to say in all my years, I have never worked with a crew as good as the crew that we have onLandmanever, once,” he said. “You can’t find a bad apple in the bunch … they really are lovely people.”

Despite the show’s success, Thornton remains grounded in his approach to the role, even when moments from the series go viral. For example, when his character described the hosts ofThe Viewas a "bunch of pissed off millionaires bitching about how much they hate millionaires."

“Yeah, anytime you say anything about anybody in the media, obviously, it’s going to be a big thing,” he tells PEOPLE on the red carpet. “So I don’t know … they point me in a direction, and I do what I’m told and try to be myself.”

Part of what makesLandmanso compelling, Thornton explains, is the unpredictability, something he embraces as an actor.

“Taylor keeps it pretty close to the vest. He doesn’t really tell us until the last minute,” he shared on the panel. “Some actors like that, some actors don’t. I personally love it because in real life you don’t know what’s gonna happen next.”

That mystery is exactly what fuels his early thoughts on what’s to come.

“I got a feeling season 3 is going to be a combination of season 1 and 2,” Thornton tells PEOPLE. “Where you’ll have the danger and the tension of season 1 with the sort of family craziness and the business side of season 2 … I have a feeling that that’s what it’s gonna be.”

He’s quick to clarify, though, that it’s just a guess, not insider knowledge. “I promise you no one told me that,” he adds with a laugh.

The actor also relishes the opportunity to share the screen with longtime friends, includingDemi MooreandSam Elliott.

“Demi and I go way back. I’ve known her a long time,” Thornton says. “And Sam and me and Andy and Demi all go way back. So it’s just a pleasure for us all to be together now and be able to be around each other a lot.”

When Thornton first learned Elliott would be joining the series as his onscreen father, his reaction was emotional.

“Sam and I go way, way back. … and then Taylor called me one night … and when he told me it was Sam, I went to my wife, Connie. And I was literally crying when I told her … because I love this guy,” Thornton recalled during the panel.

As for whether fans can expect more scenes between the two? “Oh, I’m sure I will. Yeah, I love Sam,” Thornton says. “I mean, we’re like kinfolks almost.”

Earlier this year, Thornton stressed that the series' triumph was "a tribute" to Sheridan.

"He knows who to cast and for what part. He really does. Some writers write with their own voice for every character, but each person on this show is their own thing. I love that," he toldVarietyin February. "One of the most brilliant things Taylor's done with his shows is he has very strong individual characters with their own voices."

Nicole went on to recount her attempt to leave Venice in the middle of the night to be with her grieving family.

“I remember getting into a boat in the canal, literally at night, trying to find my way to the airport, and then turning around going, ‘I can’t even do this,’ ” she told the audience. “Then I went back to bed. And I was alone. My husband wasn’t there, my children weren’t there. I was there to win an award, which should’ve been a beautiful thing. That there is the contrast of life.”

Nicole said the painful experience reminded her that she is "resilient" and can "survive pretty much anything."

“She came from an era where she wasn’t given the career advice she would’ve loved," Nicole explained. "She raised us, supported my father, helped him get his PhD. She basically gave to her family and didn’t have the career that she would’ve loved to have had. She was exceptionally smart."

I am beyond grateful that I get to say her name to all of you through Halina," Reijn continued, reading Nicole's statement. "The collision of life and art is heartbreaking, and my heart is broken."

"And thank God she said that," Nicole continued, explaining that she ultimately went down "a much more interesting road in her career" by doing more producing and pursuing meaningful projects like a film adaptation of the playRabbit Hole.

Billy Crystal Recalls Late Comedian Milton Berle Slapping Him in the Face — on 2 Different Occasions

Billy Crystal recalled the late comedian Milton Berle punching him on two separate occasions, joking that he “may be the last one alive to know Milton Berle stories”

NEED TO KNOW

  • “This was a man who sold more television sets — Milton was Mr. Television for a reason,” the actor and comedian said of Berle’s legacy

  • The former Texaco Star Theatre host died in 2002 at age 91

Billy Crystalhas nothing but fond memories of Milton Berle — even if some of them were painful.

While joking that he “may be the last one alive to know Milton Berle stories” during an April 15 appearance onThe Late Show with Stephen Colbert, theWhen Harry Met Sallyactor, 78, recounted two separate occasions in which the lateTexaco Star Theatrehost slapped him across the face.

On one occasion, Crystal found himself on a panel with Berle andCarl Reineron what would be the final episode ofTonight Starring Steve Allen.

"I sat in between the two of them, these two bookends, the giants of television," he toldStephen Colbert. “This was a man who sold more television sets — Milton was Mr. Television for a reason. He helped kill the movie business in the beginning because people stayed home to watch this new amazing thing called television.”

While things were going smoothly at first, the crew told the trio around 20 minutes into the taping that the cameras “were not registering” anything. So, they had no choice but to start all over again.

"Milton Berle turns to me and says, ‘Looks like I’m on,’ ” Crystal went on to recount. “He then asks for a — ‘Give me a mic, give me a mic!’ So, now he goes out in front of the audience and he does a bunch of time, and it’s just hilarious, but weird.”

"He’s doing it, he’s walking on his ankles, he’s doing everything,” he continued. ‘And he finishes, comes back, we give him a standing ovation, and he looks at me, and he slaps me in the face."

Clarifying that the unexpected punch was purely for laughs, Crystal said that Berle then invited him over to his house to “smoke some dope” and see his impression ofJerry Lewisdirecting a movie — which may involve another comedic punch.

While Crystal simply said that he was looking forward to it at the time, the pair ended up bumping into each other a few weeks later while thePrincess Brideactor was grabbing dinner with comedian Alan King at Los Angeles restaurant Spago.

“Alan King is facing me, so Alan can’t see Milton," he explained, noting that Berle kept popping his head up to make absurd noises while sitting behind him. "Then there was the cigar under the upper lip. This went on forever and ever and ever, and I’m just dying.”

Eventually, Berle finished his meal and walked over to Crystal’s table, setting the scene for his Jerry Lewis impression.

"Now, listen, your wife has left you, you’re lonely, you’ve been drinking too much. Life is meaningless,” Crystal recalled Berle saying, occasionally slipping into an over-the-top impression of the late comedian. "You’re in a hotel all by yourself, right? You have to reach inside yourself, Bill."

“Just think about any loss in your life, any pain. You have to summon it and say, ‘This really is sucky,’ ” he continued in Berle’s voice. "And then he got up and he slapped me in the face again. He hipped me into the ground.”
